Angelique was rescued from a dumping grounds called Dogpatch in August 2022. She appeared to have been horribly abused, at about 400 lbs underweight with several open wounds. She underwent extensive surgery and was in rehab for 6 weeks. Angelique continues to heal nicely and lives out her days with Rae and Spirit.

I was volunteering the morning after a starving little filly was rescued from Dogpatch. She was standing in a stall in the main barn with her raggedy head hanging down, an IV band around her neck, and a huge ugly gash near her left hip and various other wounds on her body. The vet and Karen were standing outside the stall talking quietly. I figured they were discussing what to do next and maybe even if she could be saved. My eyes were blurry with tears and rage that this beautiful young creature had been so mistreated. She kept looking at the water bucket over in the corner of her stall & I instantly knew she wanted a drink but couldn’t walk to it. I asked if I could bring her a bucket of water and the vet said “Give her anything she wants!” I quickly grabbed a bucket & brought it to her. She drank that and half of a second bucket. As I stood in front of her holding that bucket I looked at her huge black wet eyes and was overwhelmed by the feeling that she wanted to live!! I named her “Bright eyes” in my head. I know she was named Angelique but she will always be “Bright eyes” to me!
Earlier this Spring I was mucking the donkey’s corral and Angelique was in corral next to It. I always said Hi to her when I’d see her but because she had become a little nippy, only staff was allowed to get near. She walked over to the fence & reached her nose towards me sniffing. I held out my fist and she nuzzled my hand softly. I just stood still and said “You remember, don’t you, Bright Eyes! I know I will never forget and will forever be thankful that Equine Voices gave you the chance to blossom into the beauty you have become!”
