When I first came to Tubac, AZ, I went to a Non Profit Event which showcased all the non profits in town and immediately gravitated to Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary and met Karen Pomroy who founded the organization in 2004. We were hoping to find a house in the area to buy as our winter home. The first thing I told Karen was that if we moved here, I would want to volunteer. Well, we found a home in Green Valley and as soon as we could get here, I signed up to be a volunteer and started a week after we moved.
I love horses, and all animals and I’ve always wanted to help in any way that I could. I’ve never seen a horse stable so well run and horses taken care of with such love and care. This place, in the middle of a hot desert ,is certainly a new experience for me. The backstory on these beloved creatures is heartbreaking and to witness up close, how well they are cared for and loved is truly an example of humanity and altruism. Each horse has a story and each one is cared for in the best possible way according to his/her needs. (Diet, grooming, etc.) The sanctuary is so well kept, the individual stalls, twice daily cleaned, swept, with water troughs skimmed and freshened. I love doing whatever I can to be a part of this wonderful community of dedicated volunteers. It gives me a great feeling of knowing that I am doing something positive for so many horses who’ve been neglected, abused and abandoned. Just being around horses is therapy for the soul and to watch them thrive is such a gift. I am very proud to be a volunteer here at Equine Voices and will do what I can to help make a difference.
